Surgery Postponed

The bypass surgery (I prefer the term “bypass surgery” to “open heart surgery”) was originally scheduled for August 2. Following pre-operative assessments this afternoon, we decided to postpone the procedure about a week. I had some lab readings that changed a bit over the last week, and out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to give the kidney another week of rest before we subject it to another surgery.

Both the transplant nephrologists and the cardiac surgery team are OK with this decision. From a kidney standpoint, we want to do everything that we can do to protect the new kidney. From a cardiac standpoint, the blockages that I have need attention, but they do not present an emergency situation. We will continue to monitor the labs and execute the bypass surgery at the appropriate time.
